Questions about Michigan's ORV Trails
Are "Go Carts" allowed on the trails?
This depends on the Go Carts width. A "Go Cart" is classified by Michigan law as an ORV. Michigans' dedignated trail system has three "types" of "trails". More accurately, Michigan has three maintenance standards for the trail system. Some of the designated trails are designed for, or, maintained for, use by "motorcycles". These trails are only 26", on the ground. A Go Cart, most likely, will not "fit" on these types of trails. Other trails are maintained for use by vehicles up to 50" in width. These are commonly refered to as "ATV" trails. These trails are 50", on the ground. The last catagory of trails are designed to carry ORV's of all sizes. These are called ORV Routes. They are for vehicles up to 72" wide.
If the Go Cart is less than 50" wide it can be on ATV Trails or ORV Routes. If the Go Cart is wider than 50" it can only operate on the Routes.

Are all of the trails in Michigan so narrow?
Michigan's trails are maintained to three standards. They are:
1. For Motorcycles, 26", on the ground, 40" at handlebar height on up to 8'.
2. For ATV's, 50" on the ground, on up to 8'.
3. For "Full Size" vehicles, 72" on the ground, on up to 8'.
Be sure you are driving on a trail that is designed and maintained for the vehicle you are operating. top of page
