Questions about Michigan's ORV Laws

Is it legal for my 9 year old to drive a 90cc ATV on the trails?

NO. However, do not confuse this restriction with the "recommendations" made by the manufacturers of ATV's. The manufacturers recommendations, which can typically be found on the vehicle or in the owners manual, are a good place to start when sizing a youth to an ATV.

The key part to Michigan's definition of an ATV is the engine size reference found in within the law. Read This Law Excerpt

If the owners manual for the ATV identifies the engine displacement to be outside of this range, (50-500cc) then the vehicle is classified as an ORV and your child can drive it on the trails, as long as they have direct visual supervision and a safety certificate.

We live outside of Michigan. Do our children need a safety certificate?

Yes. All ORV operators, under age 16, operating an ORV in Michigan, must have a safety certificate.
